Transition Towns Film Screening Series
Arboretum Marbella have organised a series of monthly film screenings about the global movement Transition Towns, a campaign to create more sustainable communities.
The first screening, “The Power of Community, How Cuba Survived Peak Oil”, took place on the 8th June and detailed the challenges which the Cuban people faced when the collapse of the Soviet Union and US sanctions left them with limited fuel, wide spread power cuts and food shortages. It illustrated that by working together and making simple changes in the way in which they lived and worked, they were able to overcome the crisis while creating a more sustainable community.
The crisis mimicked the problem which experts predict will affect the price and availability of oil in future decades. The next free screening, entitled “The Crude Awakening”, takes place on 13th July at 19.00 at FNAC, La Cañada, Marbella and looks at the problems caused by diminishing fossil fuels, outlining how they can be overcome.
Following on from this, monthly screenings will run until October, these will take place on the 10th August, 14th September and 12th October at 19.00. These screenings will inform people about the different aspects of the Transition Towns initiative and prepare the way for a conference of national significance on 27th October, which will feature highly influential speakers including the co-founder of the Transition Network and author of the Transition Handbook, Rob Hopkins.
