Practicing what you preach – Why is it that you don’t do for yourself what you do for others?
We often give great advice to friends, family, kids and clients, but how often do we actually practice what we preach?
I see many beautiful and intelligent women, praise their friends, tell them to believe that they are gorgeous and have more self-confidence, but they don’t do the same thing themselves. It’s easy to offer these pearls of wisdom, but so much more difficult to follow through and actually apply it to our own lives.
At the beginning of this year, we made a New Year’s Resolution for our own company to start actually doing for ourselves what we do for our clients and market ourselves in a proactive way.
It’s incredible to think that a marketing company that knows exactly how to market a business, has done virtually nothing for themselves for such a long time, but it’s true! So this year we have made a conscious effort to allocate time and resources to market ourselves as if we were a client and have started posting regularly on our Facebook and Twitter accounts and taking part in the great 30 Day Blogging Challenge (big thanks to Sarah Arrow). We have also diversified to take advantage of a area of the market we weren’t being able to support, whilst improving our brand and visibility by setting up and promoting marketing training courses. We also decided to make a big splash in our new area of the Western Costa del Sol by establishing a networking group, conducting business outreach and attending local events.
Due to this activity, we have more than tripled the traffic to our website, significantly increased our enquiries, established our reputation as experts in our field and really boosted our online and offline presence. Plus, we’ve also been able to test out on our own company tools and options that could be highly beneficial for our clients, able to see what really works and prove the effectiveness of different marketing channels, which makes us better at what we do and more confident in our ability to do our job.
I am now trying to do more things that I tell others to do – eat fruit and veg to be big and strong (something I tell my son daily but struggle to follow myself), believe in myself, allocate some me time and be kind to myself (something I tell my friends but don’t normally apply) and stop feeling guilty for what I can’t do, but rather be proud of what I do (a mantra for all working Mums). Can you practice what you preach too and be happier or more successful?
If we can help you better promote your company, or improve your ability to practice what you preach, please consult us about our marketing and PR services on the Costa del Sol, or attend one of our business training courses in Marbella.
