Wearing unsuitable sunglasses can cause more damage than wearing none at all

This summer, Specsavers Opticas in Spain have conducted a survey about protecting the eyes from the sun, and with some interesting results.

Almost 100% of people asked know the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun, but not all of these people wear suitable sunglasses to protect their eyes from damage. According to the survey conducted in the Costas and Mallorca, at least 40% of people aged 18-34 wear sunglasses for fashion purposes as well as protection. However, not all sunglasses provide sufficient protection from damaging UV rays.

To ensure adequate sun protection, choose sunglasses that meet industry standards and carry the ‘CE’ mark which indicates these shades have met the necessary requirements for the European market.

The National College of Opticians and Optometrists in Spain (CNOO) have been campaigning for years on the importance of protecting your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun. They report on their website that close to 80% of the 12 million sun glasses sold in Spain during 2005 haven’t passed any quality control. They say “It is fundamental to use lenses with special filters that fit the following criteria: stop dangerous solar radiation reaching your eyes, like infrared and ultraviolet, and reduce the intensity of the visible radiation to remove glare and have a clear and comfortable vision. Only sun glasses bought in optical stores with advice and prescription of an optician or optometrist can guarantee the quality of the filters and the eye health of the user.”

Huerto – a taste sensation in Puerto Banus

We were lucky enough to get a sneak peak inside Huerto before the doors officially open to try some of their food and we were totally blown away by what this talented team have achieved.

This is food like you will never have experienced it before, blending flavours and textures which you would never think of putting together and creating something totally exquisite. You really need to try this food to believe it and it should be top of the list for any foodie on the Costa del Sol.

All the food reflected the ethos of the restaurant which is to apply the low food-miles concept, selecting the very best, fresh, local produce to create imaginative and surprising dishes.  They have found the best local producers, farmers and fishermen and want to showcase their fantastic produce in modern dishes which offer a powerful and intoxicating blend of flavours.

The Menu

It was fantastic to be given a taster menu of dishes which you may have never selected on an a la carte menu but which will surprise you and delight all your senses. We were presented with four courses of the most extraordinary food which was said to be the “best food I have ever eaten in Spain” by the food critic on our table and I certainly agree.

Eye advice for Over 60s: Yearly eye test can detect glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration

Specsavers, the UK’s “most trusted” opticians, are advising Costa del Sol residents over the age of 60 to have an eye test at least once a year. Older eyes are susceptible to diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, which can be detected during an eye test. Early diagnosis can help prevent further damage in many cases.  To encourage residents to have an eye exam, Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola is offering its signature, UK standard eye test to anyone at no cost (no purchase necessary) until 21st May, 2011.

Optician Amrik Sappal of Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola explains “Some people wait until their vision becomes impaired before having an eye test. This can be risky because some eye diseases have few noticeable symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. Our advice to those over 60 is – Make an annual eye test a part of your normal healthcare routine.”

Opticians concerned that kids aren’t getting their eyes tested

In a survey conducted by Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola to establish whether parents were taking their children to have their eyes tested, opticians were alarmed at the low incidence of those that were.

Opticians recommend a yearly eye test for children from three years old, yet the survey revealed that in Fuengirola only 42% of respondents with children between 6 and 12 years old had taken their children to have an eye test with an optician. This fact is even more surprising as 92% of the respondents felt that poor eye sight could affect their children’s performance at school.

Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola Amrik Sappal explains why eye tests are so important “Throughout our children’s early life parents should make sure that their eyes are healthy and that their vision is being corrected if required so they can thrive at school and lead a full life. Regular eye tests can detect problems with your vision and catch treatable conditions early, to protect your eyes and safeguard your vision. This is particularly important with children, as during the first 12 years of their lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through vision, yet one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. This shows the crucial role that eye tests play in caring for our children’s health and why you should make sure their eyes are tested by a qualified optician every year.”

An exciting new event for the Marbella social calendar

This summer will see the introduction of The Millionaires’ White Summer Party to Marbella, a dusk ‘til dawn Event that is sure to become an important annual fixture on Marbella’s social calendar. This glamorous Event will take place in the exquisite, jasmine scented gardens of the privately owned Finca la Concepcion, just off The Golden Mile, on Saturday 30th July 2011 and Shaw Marketing Services are delighted to be taking care of the public relations for the event.

Shaw Marketing Services supports MLGA

As part of our commitment to supporting local charities, we’re helping Marbella Ladies Golfing Association launch their fundraising drive for 2011 by promoting their plans to the local press and the golfing press in the UK.

We’re getting excellent support from the local media and we’ll be discussing it on Talk Radio Europe tomorrow at 1pm. So far, The News Newspaper and Essential Magazine have agreed to run the press release and websites In Malaga Today and Marbella Family Fun have also picked up the story so it’s a great start.

We hope this press coverage will attract more members to the organisation, interest businesses in sponsoring their events and generally kick-start their fundraising efforts. Together, we’ll be working towards their ambitious target of raising 8,000€ for Cudeca and Ciudad de los Niños over the coming year.

Client Case Study – Trackdays Spain

Trackdays Spain was Shaw Marketing Services’ first client and a great one to get our teeth into. Although they had a very small budget and couldn’t advertise, public relations alone was enough to generate over 20,000€ worth of coverage!
