Taking on the Caminito del Rey for Charity

TEN team members from Specsavers Ópticas Fuengirola are preparing to take on the Caminito del Rey to raise funds for the diabetes research foundation DiabetesCERO. Although once known as one of the world’s most dangerous footpath, it is now safe to cross but a real challenge for those with a fear of heights.

The hike takes 3-4 hours, and the route is 7.7 kilometres in total. The store staff from Specsavers Ópticas will be donning their hard hats and setting off on the hike together on 29th September 2024. They are looking forward to the activity, but there are a few nerves in the group about the heights at which they’ll be walking. The part that will be getting hearts racing is the walkways suspended 100 metres above the spectacular Los Gaitanes gorge. There’s even a glass balcony, jutting out from the walkway to appreciate the massive drop below you, for those who dare.

Store directors Amrik Sappal and Judith Borland have organized the trip to reward their team for their hard work, have a chance for some team building and to raise money for their chosen charity, DiabetesCERO. As part of this activity, they aim to raise at least €250 for the charity, which is funding research to find the cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

Amrik explains, ‘We launched our new charity partnership in March to raise €5,000 for DiabetesCERO this year, across our nine stores in Spain. We have been collecting money in store for eye tests and glasses repairs since then, and now we’re planning a number of fundraising challenges to end the year on a high.

In September, Judith and I and all the store staff will be taking on the Caminito del Rey. Many of the team will be facing their fear of heights to complete the route, but I’m sure together we’ll make it across those 100m raised walkways. You can sponsor us to do the walk via Go Fund Me, or pop into the store to make a donation in the collection tins.

On November 3rd, we will also be getting active again to support diabetes. A number of the team will be joining the La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group Sponsored Walk from the Plaza del Torreón. All sponsorships received from our team will be split equally between our local diabetic support group, which does so much to help people with diabetes in our area, and DiabetesCERO.

We hope people will get behind these two charity challenges and sponsor our team to raise the maximum amount for these great causes and hit our national target of raising €5,000 for DiabetesCERO.’
