100 People 1,000 Trees Smashes Target to plant 4,000 Trees
On December 7th 500 people gathered at Arboretum Marbella in beautiful sunshine to plant trees for this local environmental charity which is creating a people’s forest just behind Marbella’s bus station.
This was the start of the 2013-2014 season and the aim was to get 100 people to plant over 1,000 native trees and shrubs in just one day. Due to the huge interest they were able to exceed their target by bringing together 500 people to plant more than 4,000 trees. As well as planting there was music, activities for the kids, a puppet show and a workshop and everyone went home with a seed to plant for next year.
Founder of Arboretum Marbella Alejandro Orioli commented “This event offers the opportunity to plant a tree in this public park and help to conserve our native species and support our initiative to offer environmental education to all. It’s beautiful to see so many people taking part in a spirit of collaboration, building new relationships and strengthening the community by literally putting down roots! It fills me with emotion and happiness to see whole families connecting with the earth, enjoying nature and children growing up with an awareness of the importance of caring for our planet.”
Arboretum Marbella is a non-profit group which relies totally on donations, sponsors and members. Membership is from just 5€ per month and the charity offers the option to give the gift of a tree – a perfect Christmas present.
